Day of the 7 Billion

The Population Investigation Committee: its history and influence over the last 75 years

The Population Investigation Committee, a small independent research group, was founded in 1936 and since World War II has been housed at the London School of Economics. Prof. Sir Tony Wrigley, Chairman of the Population Investigation Committee 1984-1991 chaired an afternoon symposium to celebrate the launch of the historical archives of the PIC at the Wellcome Collection Conference Centre on Friday 18 February 2011. CPC Supports Young Statisticians

CPC are pleased to sponsor The Young Statisticians' Meeting 2011, an annual conference organised by career young statisticians. The event is specifically tailored to the needs of statisticians and researchers in the first ten years of relevant career. CPC Director presents at the British Science Festival

'Population Change in the UK' was the title of the talk that Jane Falkingham presented at the British Science Festival at Aston University on 17th September 2010. Jane's talk was attended by over 80 people, many of whom were members of the general public.

PopFest 2010

The eighteenth PopFest Conference was held at the University of St Andrews in association with the University of Dundee, from 28th to 30th June. PopFest is an annual conference organised by postgraduates from all disciplines studying any aspect of population and demography. The two keynote speakers, Tomas Sobotka and Catherine de Wenden, attracted a good and appreciative audience, and the postgraduate presenters delivered a range of interesting and diverse papers, each session ably chaired by fellow post-graduates. The most valuable element for the post-graduates was feedback from the floor and follow-up discussion stimulated by each presentation.

ESRC/CASS Conference organised by CPC

St Andrews was the venue for the joint ESRC/CASS Conference on Migration & Labour Markets on 12th-14th June 2010. The conference included presentations from both CPC members and academics from the China Academy of Social Sciences. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in several research debates. CPC @ 'The Changing Face of Scotland' event

Four academics from The Centre for Population Change took part in an event to explore demographic change and patterns of migration within Scotland on the 18th March 2010. Allan Findlay, Elspeth Graham, Chris Wilson and Robert Wright contributed the latest evidence to the debate on demographic change in Scotland and it's likely impact on service provision.
