  • Recession and social vulnerability in Europe: Insights from demography

7 May 2013 - CPC collaborated with Population Europe and the Centre for Demographic Studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona on an event which focussed on the social effects of the economic crisis on families and generations, youth, and migrants from a demographic perspective.

Professor Jane Falkingham and Dr Jakub Bijak from CPC took part in the event, which featured a discussion on cutting-edge demographic research between scientists, politicians, policy makers, and representatives from interest groups and NGOs based upon presentations from eminent scholars.

A panel debate followed, with experts from policy, civil society, and research, on the new social challenges of the European recession for policies and society. View the event programme.

You can view Dr Bijak's slides from the event on 'Migration and Recession: From Uncertainty to Resilience' and you can watch a video of the proceedings on the European Commission website (Dr Bijak from 48:35, Professor Falkingham from 210:35)

There were also live tweets on the day, which you can see on Twitter under #populationEU

Further details are available on the Population Europe website.
