14 January 2015 - The Economic and Social Research Council - formerly known as the Social Science Research Council until 1983 - was set up in 1965 by the then Secretary of State for Education, Anthony Crosland. The foundation of the SSRC marked the elevation of the importance of social science. During their 50 years, world-class research funded by the ESRC has been instrumental in providing robust evidence to government, business and the general public on a wide range of social and economic initiatives.

On the 14 January the ESRC held an anniversary reception 'Social science shaping society - past, present and future' to celebrate their 50th year. The celebration was held at the House of Commons and included 200 invited guests including members of CPC. During the celebrations there were a number of high profile speakers including the Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, Minister of State for Universities, Science and Cities, Dr Alan Gillespie CBE and Professor Jane Elliott from the ESRC, Polly Toynbee from The Guardian newspaper and Sir Andrew Dilnot CBE, Chair of the UK Statistics Authority.
