  • Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) Annual International Conference 2015

1-4 September 2015 - This year's Royal Geographical Society - Institute of British Geographers annual conference took place at the University of Exeter and welcomed over 1,200 geographers from around the world.

CPC researchers Dr David McCollum and Professor Allan Findlay attended the conference to present recent research into the potential role immigration plays in extending flexible labour market structures.

There is considerable academic and policy interest in how immigrants fare in the labour market of their host country's economy. This research, published in the June 2015 edition of the journal Work, Employment and Society, is set within these debates and explores the connection between migrant labour and segmented labour markets. Specifically the analysis focuses on East-Central Europeans in Britain: a substantial group of largely economic and recent migrants.

The research uses a large number of interviews with low-wage employers and recruiters to examine the role served by East-Central European migrant labour in the UK labour market. It questions whether the role served by this migrant labour is different from usual perceptions and explores how employer practices and other processes 'produce' these employment relations. The research was presented in the 'Exploring the migration industries' session.

Further information on the conference can be found on the Royal Geographical Society website.
