  • Population Europe Tandem Talk 'Who Cares? Balancing work and care or parents in mid-life'

9 December 2015 - CPC Director Professor Jane Falkingham took part in a Population Europe Tandem Talk in Brussells. Professor Falkingham spoke alongside Ernest Maragall, MEP for Spain. Their talk was entitled 'Who Cares? Balancing work and care or parents in mid-life'.

Mid-life has become a very busy phase of our lives: Due to population ageing, the prevalence of caring rises steeply between ages 45 and 55. At the same time this period also coincides with a range of other transitions. As for example working lives will continue to be extended, supporting people to juggle work and care at this stage in their life-course will be critical to maintain and develop necessary care solutions.

This Tandem Talk looked at the dynamics of informal care in mid-life, the relationship between care and paid employment, and how the provision of care by adult children to their parents is connected with the flows of support from parents in earlier life. A solid understanding of these trends is crucial to develop suitable policy solutions that help balancing work and care in mid-life.
