  • Growing reach of population sciences

A policy brief written for the Dubai School of Government by University of Southampton PhD student, Sylvia Szabo, has recently been translated into Arabic, extending the reach of population research undertaken at CPC's base institution.

The policy brief, entitled 'The Water Challenge in the UAE', was first published in December 2011 and looks at population change and water scarcity in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Since the discovery of oil in the UAE, the country's population has risen constantly. This has put considerable pressure on the natural resources and the infrastructure of the country, which has had to provide water, food and facilities for millions of new residents.

The paper explores how economic boom and population growth triggered increased demand for water, and considers the question of whether population growth necessarily implies water shortages. It then provides several policy suggestions on how to optimise water use.
