  • New Publication: Young People and Social Policy

CPC researchers Ann Berrington and Juliet Stone have contributed a chapter to a new edited volume, published by Palgrave Macmillan, providing one of the first in-depth analyses of youth as an important case for contemporary social policy.

The book, entitled "Young People and Social Policy in Europe Dealing with Risk, Inequality and Precarity in Times of Crisis" is edited by CPC associate Steven Roberts (University of Kent) alongside Lorenza Antonucci and Myra Hamilton. The book explores the effects of both the economic crisis and austerity policies on the lives of young Europeans, covering a number of policy areas relevant to youth transitions including education, labour market, housing and social security policies.

Prof Berrington and Dr Stone contribute a chapter entitled "Young adults' transitions to residential independence in Britain: the role of social and housing policy", in which they review recent UK housing policies and presents new empirical findings on young adults' living arrangements. They suggest that limited state support can potentially lead to reliance on family resources as a 'safety net', but that such support is not universally available and certain groups of young adults may be particularly disadvantaged by welfare restrictions. They therefore argue that policy should seek to narrow, rather than reinforce such housing inequalities between sub-groups of young adults.
