  • CPC members publish article in Citizenship Studies journal

CPC members Professor Derek McGhee and Dr Emila Piętka-Nykaza have recently had their article 'Stakeholder citizenship: the complexities of Polish migrants' citizenship attachments in the context of the Scottish independence referendum' published in the journal Citizenship Studies.

The article focuses on the experiences of Scotland's largest foreign-born minority group, namely Poles, in the run-up to the Scottish independence referendum in 2014.

Using 20 in-depth interviews, the researchers explored participants' justifications for voting (or not) in the referendum, and were able to examine and better understand how migrants establish their citizenship through articulating their social, economic and familial attachments to their adoptive country and their country of origin.

The researchers found that the participants tended to emphasise the jus domicili principle (citizenship based on location of residency) when justifying their eligibility to vote in the referendum. However, they also extended this to include the intention to stay in Scotland as a central aspect of their continuing stake in (and right to vote in the referendum to determine) Scotland's future.

The full article is available on the Citizenship Studies website.
