Brexit referendum leads to decline in EU migration to UK

A recent study examining the effects of the Brexit referendum on migration patterns has shed light on the significant decline in EU migration to the United Kingdom.

The findings of the study by CPC-CG and QuantMig members Dr Valentina Di Iasio and Professor Jackline Wahba OBE have revealed that the period of uncertainty surrounding the Brexit referendum had a profound impact on migration flows between EU countries and the UK. Migrants, particularly those from EU nations, displayed a heightened sensitivity to uncertain migration policies. The lack of clarity during this time led to a decreased willingness among EU migrants to choose the UK as their preferred destination.

The attractiveness of the UK as a destination in terms of economic opportunities, quality of life, and social integration had already experienced a decline prior to any changes in EU migrants' rights and freedom of movement. The study showed that the uncertainty surrounding the Brexit referendum made the UK more undesirable and impacted on the decisions of potential migrants.

Dr Di Iasio commented: “As the UK charts its course in the post-Brexit era, these findings serve as a reminder of the importance of clear and well-defined migration policies. A comprehensive approach is needed to manage migration effectively, address declining attractiveness, and foster an environment that welcomes and supports migrants.

“Moving forward, policymakers must prioritise the formulation and implementation of clear migration policies that provide stability, address concerns, and create a favourable environment for migrants. By doing so, the UK can navigate the complexities of migration in a post-Brexit landscape and harness the potential benefits that international talent brings to the nation's prosperity and diversity.”
