CPC at the European Population Conference, 2012

The European Population Conference (EPC) is a bi-annual conference organised by the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS). EAPS is an international and multidisciplinary forum for population studies with a special focus on Europe.

The 2012 European Population Conference was held at the Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA). On 13th June Francois Heran, President of European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) and Elizabeth Thomson, chair of Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA) opened the Conference. Keynote addresses followed from Gosta Esping-Andersen (Universitat Popeu Fabra), Frances Goldschneider (University of Maryland and Brown University, Peter McDonald (Australian National University) and Lena Sommestad (Social Democratic Party, Sweden).
The following day a full programme of parallel sessions began and continued until the afternoon of the 16th. Thursday concluded with the EAPS general Assembly with a keynote address given by James Vaupel (founding Director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock) and the Laureate Ceremony to honor Graziella Caselli (awarded the 2012 IUSSP Laureate Award) and James Vaupel (awarded the European Latisis Prize 2011).

The City of Stockholm hosted the conference reception on the evening of the 15th, in the magnificent City Hall, famous for hosting the annual Nobel Prize banquet. The closing statement and presentation of the Gunther Beyer Award and Poster Awards was given by President of EAPS Francesco Billari. The Gunther Beyer Award was won by Stefan Oberg, University of Gothenburg for his paper "Socioeconomic differences in height among young men in southern Sweden, 1818-1968". The three and a half days of presentations covered a wide range of topics including; "health and wellbeing at older ages", "fertility data and measures", "development and environment", "causes of death", "survey methodology" and "policy issues". Twenty members of CPC attended to present papers and posters, exchange ideas with other experts, gain feedback and hear about the work of others. CPC Director Jane Falkingham chaired a session on "development and environment", CPC co-Director Maria Evandrou chaired a session on "ageing in place and older migrants", CPC modelling strand leader James Raymer chaired a session on "data issues of internal migration" and cpc's Ann Berrington chaired a session on "non-standard family living arrangements".
