A workshop to review and discuss what is known about decisions to emigrate, and agent-based modeling of international migration, was held at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR), Rostock, Germany. Speakers included CPC members Jakub Bijak, James Raymer, and many others from eminent research centres across Europe.
BSPS annual conference 2013
The British Society for Population Studies (BSPS) annual conference was held at the University of Swansea 9 - 11 September, and featured a full programme of sessions across the entire demographic and population studies spectrum.
CPC at the University of Southampton Research Roadshow
CPC research was showcased between March and September as part of the University of Southampton's 'Bringing research to life' roadshow. The exhibit, entitled 'The Changing UK Population', considered the most important changes in the population of England and Wales over the last sixty years using information from the census. The roadshow visited schools around the south coast, and also included Cheltenham Science Festival and Winchester Hat Festival.

The conference took place between 26 - 31 August and included over 2000 scientific papers on topics including reproductive health, mortality, longevity and health, population ageing, migration, union formation and marriage, as well as themes addressing the interrelationship between population, development and the environment.
Understanding Society Research Conference
CPC researcher Professor Ann Berrington gave a keynote address at a three day international conference on new research based on longitudinal data, including Understanding Society, between 24 - 26 July. Coming of Age: The 21st PopFest Conference
CPC was pleased to be a sponsor at the 21st PopFest Conference which was held at the University of Southampton between 8 - 10 July. This established annual postgraduate population studies conference offers a great opportunity for postgraduate research students to present their work and develop their networks. The conference theme 'Coming of Age' marked the 21st Birthday of PopFest and its return to its birthplace of the University of Southampton, which hosted the very first PopFest Conference.
CPC Data Workshop: Exploring synergies in data with a focus on fertility, the UK and Italy
CPC-Scotland hosted the first of a number of events aiming to explore data synergies for future comparative research, which would enhance the understanding of UK population dynamics by framing them within the wider European context. The focus of the event was on data for the study of family formation and fertility under a 'UK-Italy' comparative perspective. The event, held in Ladywell House, Edinburgh, brought together researchers from CPC, the Longitudinal Studies Centre- Scotland (LSCS), the Centre for Research on Family Relationships (CRFR), the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) and the National Records of Scotland (NRS).
Recession and social vulnerability in Europe: Insights from demography
CPC collaborated with Population Europe and the Centre for Demographic Studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona on an event which focussed on the social effects of the economic crisis on families and generations, youth, and migrants from a demographic perspective. Professor Jane Falkingham and Dr Jakub Bijak from CPC took part in the event, which featured a discussion on cutting-edge demographic research between scientists, politicians, policy makers, and representatives from interest groups and NGOs based upon presentations from eminent scholars.
Seven Billionth Citizen Exhibition
CPC and the Winchester School of Art came together to produce a thought provoking exhibition on the Seven Billionth Citizen, which was launched on 2 May at the Solent Showcase Gallery, with Professor Jane Falkingham giving the opening speech. The video project, conceived in response to the United Nations announcement of the birth of the seven billionth citizen, was created by artists from the five major population zones of the world.
