  • The ESRC Centre for Population Change prides itself on being able to provide expertise and comment on aspects of population change in the UK and elsewhere including:

    • Fertility and family formation, such as why women delay childbirth, localised cultures and how they affect women's childbearing choices, and other fertility trends.
    • Living arrangements and household change across the life course, such as the 'Boomerang Generation', young people's journey to independent living and the difficulties they face in the current economic climate; changes to living alone in middle age; and the effects of ageing on living arrangements.
    • Migration, trends and drivers including; migration from the A8 countries ( Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia), unemployment and return migration, migration and pensions, as well as rural ageing, migration and care.
    • Population modelling and estimation, including improving population and migration estimation through the development of a dynamic population model using Bayesian methods.
    • Placing UK population change in the global context - the Centre is involved in numerous international research projects in China, India and Africa, as well as being a member of Population Europe with the leading demographic institutes and universities in Europe.
