Migration and ageing
Rural ageing, migration and care
This project investigates issues of rural ageing and the implications of migration patterns for care of older people. It aims to explore and project patterns of migration and their implications for care demand and supply in order to understand how individual households plan to and manage the challenges of care for older people in rural areas and to consider the implications of these findings for policies relating to care. It takes a mixed methods approach, drawing on techniques from economics, sociology and demography. Comparing Scotland and England using publicly available datasets, the project investigates how age selective migration in rural areas interacts with household structure to influence the current and future demand for care. It also uses two small scale household surveys of rural areas of Scotland and England to examine how households deal or intend to deal with care provision.
Pension outcomes of EU migrants to Britain
This project is concerned with developing a simulation model in order to assess the impact of migration upon future pension rights for a range of typical migrant workers. It aims to establish a limited number of life courses, based on current available data about demographic and socioeconomic status of migrant workers. In addition the regulatory framework for dealing with the pension rights of these workers is being analysed, taking into consideration the interaction between the migrant’s home pension system and that of the host country. The project calculates the likely pension income for these workers. Based on comparison of the pension outcomes of the migrant biographies, the operation of current EU policy arrangements is also being assessed.
