  • CPC member publishes in Demography journal

CPC member, Agnese Vitali, along with colleagues Arnstein Aassve and Trude LappegÄrd, has published an online article in the journal Demography, entitled 'Diffusion of Childbearing Within Cohabitation'.

The journal article analyses the diffusion of childbearing across space and over time within cohabitating couples in Norway. Vitali et al write that in recent years, cohabitation has "emerged as a new family form", both ahead of marriage and instead of marriage. Childbearing within cohabitating couples has also become more common over time, and researchers have found both spatial variations and similarities in this phenomenon.

The authors use a spatial panel model to uncover the key factors that have the most influence on spatial and temporal diffusion of childbearing within cohabitation relationships.

The findings of Vitali et al's study show that during the first stage of this phenomenon (1988 - 1997) increased unemployment among men was a key contributor to the diffusion. They conclude, however, by stating "the most important driver for childbearing within cohabitation is expansion in education for women."
