Communicating pension policy: Addressing disadvantages for women born in the 1950s

A recent episode of the South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership’s podcast, Speaking of Research, featured research from Yifan Ge on the effects of changes to the UK state pension age, particularly on women born in the 1950s.

In the podcast, Yifan explains that due to rising life expectancy and lower fertility rates, the UK has raised the state pension age, which disproportionately impacted 1950s-born women who were not adequately informed of the changes. This lack of communication left many unable to adjust their retirement plans, leading to financial and social difficulties.

Yifan’s research aims to identify the most disadvantaged subgroups within this cohort using quantitative methods and large-scale administrative and survey data. Unlike previous studies that focus on the general impacts of pensions reforms, Yifan’s work seeks to pinpoint who has been most affected, considering factors like education, employment history, and relationship status.

Yifan has an ADRUK scholarship linked to the Economic and Social Research Council South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership.
